Putin prepares to rain hellfire on Aleppo: Russia’s largest navy deployment since Cold War heads to Syria where it will launch wave of air strikes and turn tide for Assad

M0scow, Vladimir Putin is preparing to rain hellfire on Aleppo after sending Russia’s largest navy deployment since the Cold War to Syria for a massive campaign of airstrikes.

The Russian president has dispatched his northern fleet, including the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, to Syria with the warships on course to sail through the North Sea and then the English Channel.

Nato sources believe they are carrying fighter bombers likely to bolster the attack on besieged Aleppo – in a fresh offensive that could turn the tide for Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in his battle against rebel forces in the city.

It comes as EU leaders weighed up sanctions against supporters of Assad’s regime if they fail to stop atrocities, according to a draft summit statement that appears to target Russia.
